How to Reach Tarragona

  • By train: http://www.renfe.es
  • By bus PLANA: http://www.itenewebs.com/autocaresplana
  • By plane:
    1. Fly to Barcelona (BCN) - (90 kms. far away from Tarragona). Basically you can take either a direct bus from Barcelona airport to Tarragona, or a train from Barcelona airport to Barcelona-Sants and then from there to Tarragona. Our recommendation is in favour of the first alternative, but your decision will crucially depend on the bus schedule (7 buses a day, departing from a station at terminal T1, platforms 7 to 12). The price: 12.35 euros one-way or 22.20 euros round-trip. After 1 hour, the bus will leave you at the main bus station in Tarragona, which is located at Imperial Tarraco square.

Regarding the train (http://www.renfe.es), in Barcelona airport there is a railway station you'll find taking a bus from terminal T1 to T2. You should purchase there a ticket to Tarragona (price: around 6 euros one-way). You will take the train departing every half an hour until Barcelona-Sants (third stop: 20 minutes). There, you have to take the train to Tarragona by moving to platform 9 (please check). Notice that the last train departs at 21:30 appr. You have to take a train called either Catalunya Express or Regional Express or Regional (regional trains), not a long-distance train, which is far more expensive but not faster. Regional trains depart every half an hour or every hour, depending on the time of the day (likely, at H.03 or H.33). The final destinations may be Tortosa, Mora d'Ebre, Reus, Valencia, Zaragoza. The trip takes one hour almost exactly. In most cases, Tarragona is the fourth stop, but in some cases may be either the third one or the fifth one. You will identify it (provided the sun still shines) because it is the first stop from where you can see the Mediterranean sea.
There are trains from airport to Barcelona Sants (local trains, Cercanías- in Spanish / Rodalies-in Catalan) and then from Barcelona Sants to Tarragona (Regional trains, Catalunya Express, and other more expensive alternatives). Going by train takes about 3 hours, and it is an alternative to consider in case the arrival of plane requires a long time to wait for the bus. One can get information about train timetables from Barcelona airport from the page http://www.castelldefels.com/aeroport/ingl/accesos_aeropuerto_tren4010.htm or online (Spanish) from the page http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/cercanias/barcelona/index.html filling in the fields as
      • Origen: Aeroport
      • Destino: Barcelona Sants
For trains from Barcelona Sants please consult the page http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html.

For people arriving in the night in Barcelona, when there is no public transport to Tarragona, there could be a solution to take the aerobus.

    2. There is a small airport (Reus - REU) 15 km from Tarragona where some low-fare companies fly to. We can find links to low cost companies flying to/from Reus here:
There is a shuttle bus which can take you from Reus airport to Tarragona (central bus station located at Imperial Tarraco square). A ticket (one way) costs 2 euro. The buses schedule can be found at: click here for the schedule (pdf).
